Working under the
patronage of the Worshipful Company of Glass Sellers, George Ravenscroft made
his famous discovery of lead crystal glass. Its manufacture subsequently began
in 1674 on the site now occupied by the Savoy Hotel in the Strand. Since then
the Glass Sellers Company has continued, in various ways to support the art
of glassmaking, consolidating this in the main, in two annual awards for Glass
Art.
The Prize - The Glass Sellers Prize has increased in value and is now
worth £4,000 and the Glass Sellers Student Award is now worth £1,000
to the winner. Runners up prizes may also be awarded at the discretion of the
judging panel. Shortlisted artists will be invited to present their work to
the judges at The Glass Art Gallery, London. The winner in each category (and
his or her partner) will be invited to attend the Glass Sellers annual banquet
at the Mansion House in late October.
Submission - We are looking for originality and talent in the use of glass as a medium of artistic expression and the awards are presented for the artistic and technical excellence of submissions predominantly in glass but specifically excluding stained glass windows. Pieces submitted must have been made during 2005/6, and should not exceed 1.5 metres in the largest dimension.
Entrants may submit one piece only or a group of related pieces (where pieces are components of a single object), and may not submit for both awards. Entrants for the Student Award may submit up to three pieces and they must currently be studying or be within three years of graduating. Student finalists will receive travel expenses up to a maximum of £50.00. Winners of the main award may not enter the competition again within five years. Previous student winners are eligible to submit for the main award.
Application
- The entry form together with up to 3 good quality images (slides, photographs
or jpegs) must be received by 31st May 2006. Please ensure slides and
photographs are clearly marked with your name and numbered. Shortlisted pieces
must be available for judging at a date to be advised.
