Education and training

The Glass Sellers’ Company supports a number of educational activities.  These are:

The Abbot Scholarship Fund

Specific educational grants are made from the Abbot Scholarship Fund to pupils entering Oxford or Cambridge University from the City of London School.

Bursaries from our own Charity Fund are made to pupils at the City of London School and the Freemen's School.

Dudley International Glass Centre (part of Dudley College in the West Midlands)

The Frederick Stuart Award  of £2000 is made annually to a post-graduate student in memory of the founder of Royal Stuart Crystal.  It supports the student's tuition fees at the Dudley International Glass Centre. 

The Glass Sellers’ Award of £2000 is a grant from our own Charity Fund. It is awarded annually to an undergraduate student to support their tuition fees.

The Frederick Stuart Memorial Prize of £250 Prize awarded annually to the Dudley student adjudged to have produced the best hand blown glass piece during the academic year.


The Glass in Society Project

The Glass in Society project began in 1991 with a grant to Wath-upon-Dearne Comprehensive School, Rotherham.   Pupils undertook a project with a wide-ranging brief, which included subjects such as the history of glass, glass manufacture, glass blowing and even the physics of the material.  Subsequent funding has made it possible for the benefits to be incorporated into the National Curriculum.

Glass in Society allows students to earn a Crest Award, which is a national accreditation scheme designed to recognise achievement in science and technology.  The project also received support from the Standing Conference on Schools’ Science and Technology, whose aim is to excite young people about science and technology, industry and engineering. The project also

Over the years schools and colleges from London to Plymouth and the West Midlands have taken part in the initiative and provided enjoyment and a valuable learning experience for all the students involved.

Planning is now under way to extend this objective to three schools at an annual cost of up to £10,000. The amount of financial assistance that we can give to this scheme means that it can only ever assist a small number of schools, but we hope to obtain sponsorship from other sources in the years to come to enable a much wider coverage across the country.
