Awards

The Glass Sellers’ Company makes a number of Awards:

The Glass Sellers’ Science & Technology Award  - £5000 awarded every 5 years.
The award is for a significant advance in the science or technology of glass. The competition is organised by the Society of Glass Technology, and entries are judged by leading figures in the relevant scientific fields. It will next be awarded in 2006

The 2001 winner was Dr Kevin Sanderson, a research scientist with Pilkington plc for his work on a coating which when applied to flat glass effects a self cleaning process.  For many years, the industry had sought solutions to dirt and other extraneous matter adhering to glass surfaces. The basis of the work by Dr Sanderson has been to use water friendly coatings and this has proved remarkably successful.

Atmospheric pressure chemical vapour deposition (APCVD) has been used to put a new coating onto glass which has immediate practical applications and has caught the imagination of the public through the perception of "self cleaning glass". The vapour deposition uses ordinary atmospheric pressure and is much cheaper and more forgiving than the more conventional chemical and physical vapour deposition process. This innovative process contradicts the water repellent coatings which have been in common use.  Self cleaning glass is now widely available.  Click on the link to visit the Self Cleaning Glass web site.
