Jeffrey Sarmiento’s sculpture for Liverpool Museum

Jeffrey Sarmiento, runner-up of the Glass Sellers Art and Craft prize 2010, was commissioned to create a map of Liverpool for the new Museum of Liverpool.

The iconic glass sculpture, which is Printed, waterjet cut and fused glass, took two years to complete and was installed on Wednesday 16 March 2011.  It took four people to lift each 100kg section of the Liverpool Map on to its plinth in the second-floor People’s Republic gallery.  The sculpture is made up of six 2m glass panels supported by neoprene and laminate in an adjustable steel base. It took three hours to install and weighs a total of 600 kg (1322 lb).

Jeffrey  was chosen for the project alongside Belgian artist Inge Panneels in 2008 after a worldwide call for submissions.  

A book about the project is planned and will be available to coincide with the opening of the museum in July this year.
