Congratulations to our 2017 Abbott Scholar
The Worshipful Company of Glass Sellers of London Charity is delighted to announce that our 2017 Abbott Scholar is Zak Lakota-Baldwin who is reading Biological Natural Sciences at St John’s College Cambridge.
Zak achieved an A* in Maths and Chemistry, a D1 in Biology and an A in Latin at his A ‘Levels this summer.
Zak’s particular interests within biology are ecology and conservation, and he hopes to pursue a career in this field after he graduates. Whether through science journalism, to raise awareness and communicate issues to those with a non-scientific background, or active research and fieldwork remains to be seen. He says “the importance of the environment to me makes me particularly happy to be associated with the Worshipful Company of Glass Sellers, as glass represents a sustainable and reusable alternative to plastic that reduces harm to marine life and doesn’t negatively impact ecosystems”.
Zak hopes to be involved in environmental and conservation organisations in Cambridge, and pursue his interests in journalism by writing for the prestigious student newspaper Varsity next term. He also aims to become more active in the Union Society, and take part in debates and public speaking events.
Why is the Abbott Scholarship important?
Zak says: “being an Abbott Scholar links me to a wonderful community with whom I can discuss ideas and pursue new professional opportunities, while fundamentally providing me with the monetary support to make my time at university comfortable and enjoyable. Many of the volunteering and internship placements in my field of interest are entirely unpaid, and might take place abroad, so the funding provided by the bursary is especially important in opening doors to me that might otherwise be closed, and for this I am extremely grateful”.
In the meantime – we wish Zak every success and look forward to welcoming him at a dinner in 2018.
