Glass Sellers’ Apprentice of the Year 2019
The 2019 Glass Sellers’ Apprentice of the Year award was presented to Joe Boyd of Saint-Gobain Glass UK at the annual British Glass, Glass Focus Awards. The awards ceremony followed the Glass Focus Conference on 21 November at the Mercure St Paul’s Hotel in Sheffield. The event was supported by Glass Futures.
Joe has been invited to join us at the Court & Livery dinner in March 2020.
About Joe Boyd – Glass Sellers’ Apprentice of the Year
Saint-Gobain UK’s Joe Boyd is nearing the end of his apprenticeship as a Control and Instrumentation Engineer, which has seen him work on all three production lines on automation investigations, adaptations and new capability design at the Eggborough site.
Joe has been working closely with the Industry 4.0 team and his value to the company has already been demonstrated, saving the business money with programmes he has been responsible for and implemented.
The judges were very impressed with 21-year-old Joe’s work so far which includes involvement in international projects in and outside of Europe as well as being trusted to implement a £20k project from start to finish.
About the Glass Focus Awards
The Glass Focus Awards are British Glass’ annual showcase of the UK glass industry. Companies from across the whole glass supply chain come together to celebrate their achievements over the past year.

British Glass Chief Executive and Liveryman, Dave Dalton said “events such as this help showcase what our industry contributes to manufacturing, the economy, and society – and every year the submissions reveal an incredible breadth and quality of achievement”.
Glass Focus Conference
The conference was attended by delegates from across the industry and supply chain. The programme covered a wide range of subjects. Speakers included Professor Alicia Duran, Research Professor CSIC, President of the International Commission who spoke on the Significance of Promoting Diversity in the Glass Industry; and Brian McMillan, Chairman of Glass Futures gave an overview of the project to date, the outlook for Glass Futures and why the industry should get involved.
The Glass Sellers’ Company was well represented by six Liverymen – Dave Fordham, Master’s Assistant Barbara Beadman, Dave Dalton, Prime Warden Richard Katz, Chairman of the Glass Committee Maria Chanmugam and Paul McLavin.
